When you think of a wine bar, the first thing that springs to mind is not the food. You wonder about the prices, the type of selection that they’ll have and the comfort of the place. You rarely wonder if they’ll have the best truffled cheeses or exquisite charcuterie but that is exactly what 28-50 does. It’s a gamble, a big one, but in the end it really pays off.
The selection of fine dining that accompanies their wines makes it an absolute must see. And once you’re there, it keeps you interested in ways you don’t expect. Too many people go to bars and drink the same limited selection over and over. Here though, you’ll want to pair your wines with your food, opening up a whole new realm of possibilities. It’s one of the few bars in the city where you’ll see someone drinking a playful little riesling without so much as a second thought.
That’s not to say that it’s perfect. There are definitely elements that could be improved, not least the execution. The concept is fantastic but it just doesn’t feel like it’s running at 100%. The food could be that much more varied, the wine just a little cheaper. 28-50 has huge amounts of potential, and we hope it continues to grow stronger and stronger.
